Apple is investigating multiple reports from iPhone owners of AirPods randomly disconnecting and reconnecting during calls, MacRumors has learned.
A long thread on Apple’s Support Communities website has been generated by AirPods users who are regularly experiencing Bluetooth connection dropouts during phone calls, despite the fact that the wireless earphones almost never lose their connection when used to listen to music or anything else.
I’ve not seen this with my iPhone SE, but I have had a large number of calls simply drop when I’m using the AirPods. I can’t be sure it has anything to do with them, but before I had the AirPods, when using a wired headset, I rarely had calls drop.

I have a longstanding problem with my Plantronics Voyager Legend randomly disconnecting from iPhone, especially at the start of a phone call that I placed using Siri from the headset, the worst time to drop the bluetooth connection. This problem has existed on my current iPhone 6S and on the previous iPhone 5, over several IOS versions, and on at least two Voyager models, the Legend and the previous Voyager Pro.
I now have two smartphones paired with the Legend, the iPhone 6S and a ZTE ZMax Pro running Android 6.0.1. The Android does not suffer from this disconnection issue.
My guess is there’s instability in the IOS bluetooth stack (whatever that means — I’m only parroting a phrase here.)

I have a similar problem with Plantronics Voyager headsets. At the start of phone calls, especially if voice dialed on the headset, the headset loses its bluetooth connection just as the phone call starts. It will reconnect and then stay connected, but starting a phone call this way is awful.
This problem had persisted over both iPhone 6S and iPhone 5, over several IOS versions, and two Voyagers, Legend and Pro.

I guess there is instability in the IOS bluetooth stack that has gone unfixed for several years in IOS revisions and updates.
Not that I know anything about the “bluetooth stack.” I’m just parroting a phrase I’ve heard that seems appropriate.

Oops. My first comment disappeared for over an hour, so I assumed it was gone and I rewrote it. Didn’t mean to double-post.
I’m hopeful that this issue of airpods disconnecting during phone calls will finally lead to a fix of bluetooth problems that have existed in IOS for years.
