Home Sharing Broken in iTunes 12.4.1?

A number of people have reported that iTunes Home Sharing is no longer working for them from one iTunes library to another, or from iTunes to an iOS device. I’ve encountered this myself. When I try to load one iTunes library on my other Mac, I see this:

Home sharing broken

The gear spins for about a minute, then the display just returns to the previous iTunes view.

Tonya Engst, who is editing an update to my Take Control of iTunes 12: The FAQ is seeing the same thing, and a handful of people have posted on Apple’s forums describing this issue.

This does not affect Home Sharing to my Apple TV, so it seems that there’s some sort of bug in iTunes that affects sharing a library to another computer or iOS device. Is anyone else seeing this, or is Home Sharing working for you?

  1. We use home sharing all the time between a 2013 rMBP, a late 2010 15″ MBP, a early 2010 13″ MBP and an 3rd gen aTV. All are running the latest OS & updates and we’ve had no troubles whatsoever.

We’re running everything on a 2-router network of old Airport Extremes (bought way back pre-2010) with one extending the other.

  3. Working for me, El Capitan (one on the beta) and iTunes 12.4.1.6 (I think – Apple make it difficult to actually read the iTunes version in the “About” if you have aging eyes.)

  5. Works fine here as well, as far as I can tell. Two iMacs, 10.11; network: ethernet via non-apple router. Are you using a recentish Apple Airport (+WIFI)? IIRC there was an updater for those in the past few weeks. Could that be to blame?

  7. Main library is on an iMac upstairs. No problem at all accessing it home sharing to a second iMac, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.

  9. Interesting that it’s working for some people and not others. I’m not using an Apple device, and there are plenty of reports of this not working for people.

  11. When HomeSharing was announced it never worked for me as my library had over 30k items. I used an alternative, which worked immediately. Admittedly, I rarely need/use such a set up now. it must be frustrating, along with other iTunes poster features, for this to stop.
I don’t know if that 30k limit has been lifted since.
    It’s a ‘feature’ to forget about….

  13. Home sharing – from my iMac iTunes library to either of my iOS devices – has been a slug, at best, for me for at least a year or two. Sometimes, after a couple minutes, the library loads. Often, like tonight, it never does. When it does, playback is wont to be stuttery on ALAC or higher res files. Meanwhile, Plex and JRemote have no difficulty at all loading my iMac iTunes library (and more) in seconds. Plex also can stutter streaming hi-res music, but not JRemote. Apple is being out-Appled handling its own library by third-party apps. It should be ashamed of itself.

  15. Found your page after googling. I have a 2011 MBP running El Cap and a windows machine running windows 7. Until ITunes 12.x sharing the library that’s on the MBP with the windows machine worked fine. Now on windows in can take 10 min or more to load, sometimes stalls altogether. I have 5.5K files in the library, total about 35GB.
