My Mac restarted a while ago, after I installed the latest OS X update. I have a number of apps set to launch at login, including iTunes. When I switched to iTunes, I saw the Downloads window.
Yet we know that Apple killed off that window in exchange for a not-always-visible ring at the right of the iTunes toolbar, which displays a popover when you click it.
A correspondent mention recently, in an email, that he had seen this window, but couldn’t remember how he got it to display. This is the first time I’ve seen it in iTunes 12, and I’m wondering how it showed up. As I said, I did nothing but have iTunes launch at login.
Has anyone figured out how to get this window to display? I admit that I prefer this window to the popover.
Kirk, I don’t know that there is anything one needs to do to get it to display except to initiate a download. Once a download has started, it appears. Otherwise, it does not appear.

It hasn’t displayed for me since iTunes 12 was released.
Weird. I’ve not experienced that issue. But I am pretty sure I didn’t have to do anything to enable it.
Really? I’ve gotten lots of emails from people asking how to get it to display.
Maybe I’m just having good karma for a change with iTunes to make up for all the crap I’ve had to deal with re: iOS 9 😉

I am fascinated (and confused) to hear that some of you still have your downloads window in iTunes 12.

Re: iTunes 12.2 what happened to the downloads window?
I, like many of you, miss the separate downloads window in the iTunes v12.2.
Here’s an interesting side-bar for anyone more “hacker-inclined” than I am: the window is still in the application code in v12.2 (!!), but I haven’t found a way to pull it up on demand.
I know this because, I used the downloads window so often that I made a habit of leaving it open when shutting down iTunes (using ⌘+Q) so it would auto-re-open with iTunes next time. So when I closed iTunes before it updated to v12.2, the downloads window was open. After updating to v12.2, when I next opened iTunes, the download window opened as well!
So right now, on v12.2, I still have the downloads window, but I know that if I close it, there’s no way that I know of to get it back. (I have to believe that there must be some way to do so, however…)
In fact, after opening v12.2 the first time, I absentmindedly closed the downloads window with the intent of re-opening it later, and then discovered that it wasn’t in the new version. After reading this thread, I decided to see if I could preserve it by force-quitting iTunes … and fortunately that worked – when it re-opened, it also re-opened the downloads window.
So for now, I’m clinging to my “preserved” downloads window, hoping I don’t one day absent-mindedly click “close” again and “lose” it.
I used another, un-updated OS X install to look what the shortcut key for the downloads window used to be (⌥⌘+L) in the hope that it might still work on the new version, but unfortunately it does not.
So… to anyone who has the skill-set to explore the internals of the iTunes app for a “hack” that might show the window… I and many of us here would appreciate it.
Anyone up to the challenge?
[ And, to anyone who wants the downloads window back badly enough, I suspect “duplicating” my situation may be possible (but I haven’t tried it):
If you:
installed a recent previous version of iTunes (anyone know what the immediately previous version’s exact version number was?),
then opened the downloads window,
quit iTunes with the window open, and,
then re-upgraded to v12.2…
you may be able to duplicate the situation I have.
I don’t know how hard it would be to find or install an older version.
Nor do I know if v12.2 changed the iTunes library structure in a way that is incompatible with the most recent older one.
You’d want to be absolutely sure you had a backup of your library before trying this.
If anyone tries this, I’m sure lots of people would appreciate an update here about how it turned out for you. ]
Maybe, collectively, we can figure out how to get it back on demand.
