How to Rate Songs in the iOS 9.3 Music App

Apple changed the way you rate songs in the Music app in iOS 9.3. It’s not a big change, but I’ve gotten several emails from people trying to rate songs and not being able to do so.

You previously tapped the name of a song or album in the play control section of the Music app to rate a song. Now, tap the artwork, and you’ll see five little dots; tap one of them to apply a rating. For example, tap the fourth dot from the left to rate a song four stars.

Rating1  Rating2  Rating3

Tap anywhere in the artwork area other than on the stars to hide the rating and display the artwork again.

Note that if a song contains lyrics, then the stars display above the lyrics when you tap the album artwork.

  1. Ratings seem to be dead in ios 10 so far. I’m not sure about MacOS, but there goes all my smart playlists. 🙁

  3. That may work for iphones, but not on Ipod Touch. The only reason i bought my ipod was so i could rate my songs within playlists like i have been doing for years. Tapping the artwork does nothing. If i would have known this i wouldn’t have bought it. I would give up the camera and all apps and features if i could just have the music and ability to rate songs

  5. Thanks for this, I just noticed it today and it was driving me nuts. Your article made my day! I’m running IOS 9.3.5, I refuse to upgrade after the last upgrade change most of my artist’s band pics to that hideous rainbow icon.
