How to Sort Songs in the iOS 10 Music App by Title

Update: iOS 10.2 was released on December 12, and it changes the way you choose this sort option.

The emails from readers about the iOS 10 Music app just keep rolling in today. The most common questions I’ve been getting are about star ratings (I discuss that in Star Ratings Are Indeed Gone in iOS 10 Music App; But There’s Still a Way to Rate Your Songs, and how to find the Shuffle or Repeat button (learn how in How to Find the Shuffle and Repeat Buttons in the iOS 10 Music App.

But another common question goes like this: when I go to my Songs list on my iPhone or iPad, all my songs are sorted by the artist, not by the song name. How can I fix this?

Well, it seems as though iOS 10 defaults to sorting songs by artist in the Music app; which is a bit odd. If you’re going to look at a list of songs, you generally want to find a specific song, not music by an artist.

To change this, go to Settings > Music, then, in the Library section, find the Sort Songs & Albums setting.

Sort songs

Tap this, and then tap By Title, and your songs will be in alphabetical order again.

  1. It would be nice if Apple allowed you a way to edit lyrics or at least provide feedback back to them to change the lyrics. For example, Grateful Dead’s I Know You Rider is all messed up – not sure where they got the lyrics but certainly not the version they do.

  3. It will be better if Apple let you sort Albums by artist and songs by Title. Lumping it together makes no sense.

  5. Many thanks for this !!!

I recently upgraded both iOS and iTunes on my iPod and the song list basically became a huge pile of “unknown”, very frustrating.

One simple change and sanity was restored 🙂

  13. Any idea on a way to sort songs by title in a playlist? I’m mostly iOS these days, and most of my playlists came over from iTunes sorted by song name. But when I add songs to them on my iOS device, they just get tacked on at the end, breaking the alphabetical listing.

Yes, I can pick up my Mac and re-sort them, and it should sync over. But I’d like to do this on iOS if it’s possible. Or do I simply need to file another bug?

    • Unfortunately, there are no sorting option on iOS. You can manually edit the playlist and drag a track where you want it, but it would be nice if there were a menu allowing you to choose a sort order. So, yes, I’d file a bug report.

  15. Any idea what makes the song play order when viewing all songs? I push play from the first song, then press the button to skip the song, and something out of order plays.

    • Go to your songs main page and there is a shuffle all button at the top, you must have clicked it by mistake. If you close out of your music completely and then go back in they should play in order again

  17. Apple infuriates the f**k out of me when they makes these stupid changes. Just leave the product alone!!
I can now only sort albums AND songs but their Title OR by Artist. I can’t sort albums by artist and songs by title, which is the way that not only makes perfect sense, but it’s how it used to work on apple products before they changed it!!!!!
