How to Turn Off Bubbles and Balloons in iOS 10 Messages

On SixColors yesterday, Dan Moren posted an article explaining what may prevent “iMessage effects” from displaying on your device. Unwittingly, he also provided the key to turning off these annoyances.

These effects are things like bubbles and balloons that may spawn on your iOS device when someone sends you certain types of messages. Apple describes them here.

The last thing I want when I get a text message is to have to watch balloons or see some inane moving emoji. So it’s great to know there’s a way to turn them off.

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion, and toggle that setting on. This turns off a number of annoying animations on the device, and I already have it off, so I’m immune to these annoyances. But if you want to get rid of them before they start happening, take action now!

Thanks, Dan!

  1. Wow, Mr Moren is seriously off there. How shocking that something that is essentially “motion” can be disabled by a setting that explicitly reduces/disables motion/animation OS-wide.

I have it turned off, and certainly won’t miss the balloons. Is there a setting that kills any of those “stickers” in iMessages that the serious people are raving about?

  3. I have done this to my phone and they seem to keep happening. What I am speaking about is the SLAM, Loud etc effects…. Is this the same for turning those off?

  5. I had the same problem when I did the latest iPhone update.10.3.2 .
The solution depends on the model iPhone you have. I have the model 5S and the solution is different for newer models. For the older phones you need to be careful when you push the send arrow ( it can be green or blue ) when sending a text message. To send and bypass the balloon option be careful and just quickly tap the send arrow once. If you want the balloon option hold down on the send arrow and you go into the option. If you get into the balloon by mistake just tap quickly twice the “X” and that gets you out. If you have a newer model iPhone go to accessibility and below Touch Accommodations you should see 3D touch which you turn off. This should make the send arrow insensitive to how you touch the send arrow.
I thank Jessica upper level tech support at Apple for taking the time to develop this solution.

  9. Protective glass I added to my SE iPhone has messed up my touch screen making it harder to activate Commands like just tapping “x” or send to bypass those annoying balloons in messages or give other commands to my I phone…any suggestions would help.please

  11. I wish there was a way to remove the slam effects permanently without stopping all of the other effects. If anyone comes up with an answer, please comment. Thanks. Meanwhile, I will try to be precise in using the send arrow and will try the double tap to exit if I do end up in that bubble thing.
    Thank you,
    Linda
