iOS 10 Music App Ignores Tracks Marked Skip When Shuffling

iTunes has long had a tag that allows you to mark any tracks so they get skipped in shuffle mode. Select one or more tracks, press Command-I, click the Options tab, then check Skip when Shuffling.

Skip when shuffling

I apply this tag to all of my spoken word recordings, of which I have many, and to all of my classical music, which I don’t want to hear in random order.

But the iOS 10 Music app ignores this tag. If I shuffle my “songs,” then it plays everything. Music, spoken word, and any kinds of files that I have told it to skip when shuffling.

I have no solution, and have filed a bug report with Apple, but this is quite annoying for people with classical music or spoken word recordings.

  1. I noticed this morning when adding audiobooks to iTunes that the “remember playback position” and “skip when shuffling” options disappear when the media kind is changed to audiobooks. You can select them when the book is listed as music and then change the kind but I don’t know if this remains as the default state.

  3. Thank goodness for Kirk reporting this. Another reason to hold off and let the guinea pigs thru.
This irks me almost as much as losing the ratings.

And for the record, I won’t forgive Apple should these features return, and neither should you, dear reader. Have some dignity…

  7. The “remember playback position” also no longer works. I’ve always had my songs set to play from the beginning, and after the iOS 10 update, they all play from where they left off, even after double-checking the setting in iTunes and syncing my phone.

  9. I have the same issue with classical music. the only solution for the moment is to disable the “shuffle” option before selecting a classical song and than it will play. But no longer in random order as before.
