iTunes 12.5 Now Available

Apple has released iTunes 12.5.1, which is a fairly important update to the program. Featuring an improved interface, new Apple Music features, and some new classical music tagging options, iTunes 12.5.1 is available for download in the usual places. iTunes 12.5.1 also supports Siri on macOS Sierra, which is due out next Tuesday.

I’ll have some coverage of the changes very soon.

I know a lot of people hated the option to ‘Use custom colours for open albums, etc’, and it would sometimes produce illegible results, but … it would have been better to keep it as an option (off by default) rather than do away with it altogether. The new look is desperately bland and boring and uninteresting, especially when it comes to the banner-space wasteland at the top of playlists and so on.

The bright blue accents for play buttons, fly-out menus, links and so on are reminiscent of the look of browsers twenty years ago: very ugly and, frankly, rather childish.

On a similar tack, I cannot understand how the design team decided to use the same font size for the album artist as for the album title in Album view. It’s totally lacking in subtlety and often becomes truncated in the case of my classical library.

  3. Hey Kirk!

Have you noticed that when you mouse-click on a Get Info field as of 12.5.1, the ENTIRE contents of the field highlight. How many times have I clicked where I wanted to insert some text, then I look up at the screen and I’ve wiped out the previous contents of the field? If I’m working quickly and repetitively to edit multiple songs’ metadata, I could irretrievably lose data.
