iTunes 12: Restore Missing Artwork for Movies and TV Shows

Screen Shot 2015 01 16 at 8 10 57 PMFor some reason, iTunes 12 seems to lose artwork for videos. I’ve seen this occasionally, and heard from many readers who’ve encountered this issue. Today, it just happened to my iTunes library after I needed to re-install iTunes to troubleshoot a problem with my iPad.

When it happens, your movies look like the screenshot to the right.

The artwork is still there; for some reason, iTunes isn’t seeing it. To get it back, select a video, then press Command-I. You’ll see the Info window which displays the artwork. Forcing iTunes to read the tags of the file somehow gets it to read the artwork and display it correctly.

The only annoyance is the fact that you have to do this manually for each video; if you select multiple items, iTunes won’t read the artwork. So, click on one to select it, press Command-I, and then press Escape to dismiss the window, and continue this process for each of your videos where artwork isn’t displaying.

  1. Hi Kirk,

I had the dreaded apparently random embedded album art goes missing in itunes thing happen again. Cache delete/re-build did nothing and had to resort to the “first track info” trick to restore.

Only this time I noticed that the missing art wasn’t at all random. All the albums with missing art were from a recent itunes generated shuffle playlist of songs from the music library. I also switch to mini-player mode when in shuffle, with up-coming track list showing.

Don’t know how this relates to the video problem, but hoping this observations might trigger an idea in someone as to what’s going on in itunes, and an eventual fix.

    • That’s very odd. I haven’t heard of that one, but I’ll keep it in the back of my mind in case I think of something.

  3. Hi Kirk,

All the videos in my iTunes library have thumbnails but most don’t transfer to my new iPhone 6 with ios8. They show up just fine on my older iPhone 5 with ios7. Movies I have purchased threw itunes show up just fine but not videos I may have downloaded or put on from someplace else. Any thoughts?

Thanks for everything you do for the apple and music communities!

    Phil

  5. If you put it in list view, you can command-I the first (top) movie and then simply keep clicking through each movie using the arrow keys. Much faster than escaping out each time. To access, click “movies” up at the top left drop down and select “movie list”

      – right-click, get info > options,
      – change “media kind” to “movie” and click “ok”
      – go to “my movies” in itunes,
      – add movies to ipad/iphone/ipod

  11. There is an awesome applescript from Doug’s Apple Script called Re-Embed Artwork that will automate the process

    • The proper term for this bug is: CrApple. Apple writes a piece of shit OS. There are so many bugs and UI related issues all over their system, it makes a total pain to use it. Switching back to Windows 7. I really had enough of CrApple’s software. I’m sorry for wasting my money on them. The fact that I have to reindex over 300 movies because of this shit bug they can’t fix is beyond comprehension. And this is the 4th time I have to do this. You’d think that a company who constantly boasting over their cashflow could hire a few engineers to fix the bugs. Jesus…

  13. I have done all the suggestions. A form of artwork appears in my Movies in iTunes… But just get the little grey rectangle with white writing on it when I transfer them to my iPad. Very difficult to see. Any other suggestions?
