My Kindle Paperwhite’s Cracked Screen Has Healed Itself

I couple of months ago, I cracked my Kindle Paperwhite’s screen. I tossed it on my bed, one day, and it landed on my iPhone, making a nasty crack with spidery lines extending a few inches. It wasn’t broken, but there was no way I could read on that device; it was too distracting.

So, I put it aside and bought a new one (in part, thanks to Amazon offering me a 20% discount, after I inquired whether the Kindle could be repaired). Today, I went to check it out, thinking that my partner, who is happy to read a non-backlit Kindle, might want to use it. The cracks only showed up when the light was on, so I thought that she might want to use it with the light off.

I charged it for a bit, entered my PIN, then, much to my surprise, the crack is gone. If I look really close, I can see a whitish spot where the contact point was, but the rest of the crack is gone. I don’t know why this happened, but my guess is that whatever liquid is in the screen filled the spaces, and did so seamlessly, hiding the crack. I don’t know how long it took for this to “heal,” but it’s been a couple of months. (I regret that I hadn’t taken any photos of the screen to be able to show before and after views…)

So, if you have a Kindle Paperwhite with a cracked screen, hold on to it. You may find, as I did, that it will self-heal after a while.

  1. That mysterious liquid is ichor extracted from alien tissues at Area 51 — Bezos has a LOT of explaining to do…

  3. Wow. It is interesting indeed. Perhaps they might pay you now for your broken-healed Kinfle for their experiment etc.

  5. Hey, I’m wondering how you stored it for this to happen, I really don’t want to replace my whole screen for a 3mm hairline crack but like you said the light is so distracting and nobody has instructions for a patch or a filler or anything. Screen up, screen down, under other things….?

  7. The same thing has happened to mine, I am amazed and at first turned the light up to the brightest and even looked at it in the dark. Like you I just left it lying around for a couple of months, charged it up to take on holiday and the cracks have gone!!

  9. This is great – thanks for sharing. I will give it a few months before I decide whether or not to replace mine.

  13. Yesterday a crack appeared in my paperwhite (2nd gen) as well. I did not drop the device, just picked it up from the nightstand and turned it on.
The crack is not visible with the back light off, but with the light on the light pierces through the crack and makes it incredibly distracting to read.
I don’t want to shell out another 100 dollars to replace this device, so I’m looking into what the repair options are. I contacted Amazon, but they don’t offer repairs on damaged Kindles. I’m trying to see if I can source a replacement screen somewhere.

This stinks…I use the Kindle every day. I’m sad 🙁

  15. Are you serious? Because this sounds too good to be true type of situation and I’m trying to figure out whether you’re trolling with this post or not.

      • How big was the crack? I’m asking because I dropped my keys on the Paperwhite last night leaving a scar that glows brightly. Now I’m thinking that it would heal itself after reading your post.

        • About an inch long. I don’t know how long it took to heal, but when I checked it a couple of months later, the crack was almost gone.

          • wicked. i really hope this is the case for mine as well. I don’t really wanna sit it aside and wait a few months though.

  17. The same thing happened to me. I left my kindle in a hotel room and organised DHL to collect it for me, when I opened it it looked like it had a crack in it with spiders of light coming of it, by the time I had phoned to complain it had corrected itself!!

    • I would think you could use it. I just put mine in a drawer, because I didn’t think this would happen.

  19. Thanks so much for posting. Just dropped mine and cracked it. Now I’ll wait to see if it heals over instead of buying a new one immediately.

    • Same happened to me. After a travel trip, I had a small crack. A fine line about 4mm long, very bright because of backlight. But it disappeared in a few months. That happened twice.
