New iOS Update Requires Less Space to Update

Apple has just released iOS 8.1.3, the latest update to the operating system for the iPhone and iPad. In addition to the usual bug fixes, Apple says that this update:

“Reduces the amount of storage required to perform a software update.”

Apple says that this update is 246 MB, on my iPhone, but that doesn’t say how much free space it needs.

If you get a message saying you don’t have enough space, please post a comment saying how much free space you have.

  1. What would be interesting is if it requires less free space to upgrade from iOS 7 to 8.1.3 than from 7 to the earlier 8.x’s. This may have been Apple’s goal, to encourage upgrades from 7, not to make it easier to go from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3.

    • Interesting. I have a test device running 7.1.1, and decided to try a little experiment. It downloaded the update (without installing), then I filled up the device with video until there was only about 150 MB left. But the Install button is still clickable. Perhaps it has already acquired all the storage space it needs within the 8.1.3 update file (which is 745 MB)?
