Ripping CDs today on my new Mac Pro, I realized that I no longer had the eject button in my menu bar. Since I did a clean install on the Mac Pro, it didn’t carry over a lot of my settings from my previous Mac.
Having an eject button in the menu bar lets you quickly eject any optical discs that are mounted on your Mac; it doesn’t let you eject hard drives, however.
To do this, go to /System/Library/Core Services/Menu Extras, and find Eject.menu.
Double-click that item, and it adds an eject button to your menu bar. There are no options.
When I’m ripping a lot of CDs, and doing other things at the same time, I find it quicker to eject them like this than to go straight to iTunes. Your mileage may vary.
Thanks for the tip. I had no idea there was a core services with menu add ons somewhere. But in regard to the eject I use the upper right key on my keyboard. Doesn’t that let you eject a disk even when you’re not in iTunes?
No, and it doesn’t work in iTunes either. My guess is that it only ejects CD-Roms, but I haven’t seen one of them in years.
I’m confused. I’ve been using the eject button on the Mac keyboard to eject discs in iTunes since 2006.
I use a wireless Apple keyboard, and I don’t think it’s ever worked, at least on my last two Macs. Perhaps it only works with a Mac with internal optical drive? I’ve been using externals on these Macs.
My keyboards have all been made by Apple, both wired and wireless. My optical drives have always been internal, however.

What are CD’s?

Any idea how to undo it, Kirk?

To clarify, holding the cmd key down isn’t working for me; it’s only allowing me to drag the eject icon elsewhere on the menu bar.
Command-drag, but wait a couple of seconds after you pull it off.
For some reason, none of my Apple menubar items want to move downwards with the command key; only in the horizontal plane. Is there a command line way to undo displaying the eject button? Thanks!
It doesn’t look easy. See this:

Thanks. For now I used Bartender to hide it.
