Have you heard Schiff’s lectures on the Beethoven piano sonatas? They’re brilliant, and his playing of excerpts is insightful and inspired.
Unfortunately, the complete set is a major disappointment. What should have been one of the best cycles ever is largely devoid of insight and inspiration.
Did you buy the set? What I understand from the description is that the booklet contains much of the information he gave in those podcasts.
I very much like his Beethoven. I have some of these, as I said, from eMusic back in the day, and I’ll probably eventually buy the complete set. But I understand those who don’t as well.
