What’s New in iTunes 12.2

Apple released iTunes 12.2 yesterday, along with updates to iOS and OS X. The marquee feature in the new version of iTunes, as well as iOS 8.4, is Apple Music.

But there’s more to iTunes 12.2 than just Apple Music and Beats Radio. Here’s a look at what’s new in the latest update to iTunes.

  1. I’ve noticed some different behaviour in how iTunes handles files you wish to remove from the library. Previously, it prompted you to either just remove from the library (and keep the original file on your hard drive), or delete the file as well.

    Now, it appears to delete the file regardless, with the choice now being to either have it available to download back from iCloud or not. This is a significant change and could cause accidental loss of files if not used carefully.
    (Although the files do remain in the Trash of the computer and so are retrievable if necessary.)

    This is obviously related to iCloud music library and I suspect that it behaves as before if iCloud music library is switched off.
