Why do stars like Adele keep losing their voice? – The Guardian

“The rise in vocal injuries is linked to a change in what we consider good singing. Across all genres, it has become normal to believe that louder is better. (One reason that Adele is such a big star is because her voice is so big.) As a result, singers are pushing their cords like never before, which leads to vocal breakdown.”

Fascinating article about how singers lose their voices. One of the reasons is that they sing too loud, but another, perhaps, is bad “use,” which F. M. Alexander found caused him to lose his voice more than a century ago.

  1. Ironic isn’t it, in an age when all singing is done into a microphone – hence is amplified – that singers are harmed by singing too loud. How about the mixer turn that dial to 11?!
