Yesterday, seeing yet another security update for Adobe Flash, I deleted it from my Mac. I’ve had it. It’s full of holes, is too resource-hungry, and is at the end of its life.
Unlike Dan Moren, I don’t think “there are still too many websites [his parents] use it or rely on it.” I see fewer and fewer (because I use ClickToPlugin, which blocks Flash, but shows you when it’s needed), and I can always switch to Google Chrome for the occasional sites that use Flash.
Others have done this before me and written about it; it’s my turn now. Get rid of Flash; it’s a horrible piece of software. Here’s how you do it.
See this article for a tip about how to quickly switch from Safari to Chrome to view the current web page.
I would delete Flash in a second if I didn’t need the ability to watch HBOGo in Safari; watching streaming content on Chrome using it’s built-in Flash player is a low frame-rate nightmare. My Macbook never crashed until the day I installed Flash.

There ought to be good-housekeeping-seal of approval for websites that behave well or, absent that, a way of publicly shaming websites that rely on Flash. HBO and PBS should know better.

Do you visit BBC.com? I think Yosemite blocks the version of Flash on my Mac, and I have no plan to upgrade at the expense of being unable to watch video clips on BBC web.

Kirk, thank you so much for leading the charge on this. It’s about time someone spoke up. Flash is horrible. As others have said, what we do need is a set of techniques for getting around the sites that do still rely on it, however.

Another solution : this Safari extension + Applescript allows to add an “open in Chrome” button. Quite efficient 🙂

I see a Safari plugin on my Mac named Shockwave Flash. Is that different from Adobe Flash?
