Will Apple Bring Back the iTunes Sidebar?

One step forward, two steps back. This has been iTunes for the past few years. With rumors about Apple Music undergoing changes, there are now plausible rumors that the overall iTunes interface will be changing as well.

MacRumors is reporting that iTunes will see the return of the sidebar. Finally.

Here’s a screenshot (from MacRumors) showing the sidebar, the new media selection menu, and the new Up Next button (to the right of the iTunes LCD):

Itunes 14

I know many users missed the sidebar; you can access it now when you’re in Playlists view. That popup menu to select different media types doesn’t look like a good idea, but moving the Up Next button probably is. Up Next is notoriously complicated, and simply moving the button won’t help users understand it any better.

  1. I wonder if this is the actual “refresh” that was mentioned by Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi back in February.

    • They did say something about making it easier to play music. And the sidebar would certainly be welcome for that.

      • Aah yes, so you’re saying you want the choice to see or not see the sidebar taken away? So it’s not possible to hide it? (Personally I like a good sidebar).

In other news, yes, UP NEXT is not a great feature – seems to complicate things.

I would LOVE to see tabbed store browsing. But it won’t happen… Apple don’t listen to customers, only their analytics… (do you think this mini-goad will spur them into action?)

        • Yes, I would like it to be the way it was in iTunes 10 and earlier, when the sidebar was an option no matter what view you use.

I would also like tabs, or multiple windows, again, like the way it was before. Make iTunes great again!
